We offer repair services on audio equipment including amplifiers, receivers, speakers, and more. Repairs are done at our location, Drop off and pickup services are available as well as setup services for many units. On-site diagnostics may be available for certain units and issues.
Repair and restoration of home and professional audio equipment starts with a visual inspection of components and connections. Proceeding on to system checks and tests to confirm fault locations before cleaning and deoxidizing controls and switches (If necessary) to confirm if other issues are at fault. Further repairs are completed as necessary. When we receive the unit we will agree on an amount that is considered a pre-approval for evaluation and repair. Upon getting into the unit we will contact you with an estimate once we have a good idea of the needed repairs if we expect it to go over the initially agreed upon amount by too much.
We offer customized repair levels for those that need to keep costs down and those that want the best of the best. Standard level repairs aim to get units back to proper function and keep them there for a good length of time. Modifications and updates are not uncommon for several units such as the improved constant current circuits for Pioneer SX-1980 power supplies. If there is something in particular that you would like to have done, let us know at receipt of the unit so we can discuss it and make notations on our forms.
While cleaning of controls is very common, it is not without some risks on some controls and should be caried out carefully to not damage them. The nature of contacts, holders, and resistive materials in units do not promote a heavy usage of cleaners. This is a large factor in the prior statement of cleaning if needed. If cleaning controls we use the most reliable methods known to us and do not use chemicals that are known to damage them. Sadly we have seen the entire control set destroyed on some great vintage units by owners using the wrong contact cleaners and too much of the right ones.
As these wonderful vintage units keep getting older, there are age related and prior work related risks. The adhesion of the traces to the circuit boards can weaken with heat and age. Some units really don’t like to keep those traces down and others have seen techs with overly hot soldering irons or excessive dwell on components. Trace repair is a matter of life working on these and something that we have plenty of practice in. The most extreme so far has been reglassing and retracing of a very burnt power board, the resin had turned to carbon through the entire thickness for areas that exceeded half dollar size areas.
